Planning and Designating the Improving Addiction Care Team for Hospitalized Adults with Substance Use Disorder

This 2017 article describes the steps taken by a group of physicians, substance use disorder (SUD) treatment providers, and community representatives to establish an addiction care program for hospital inpatients at Oregon Health & Science University. The program includes inpatient addiction medicine consultation services, rapid-access pathways to post-hospital SUD treatment and the creation of a medically enhanced residential treatment model for patients needing SUD treatment and on-going medical services. Known as the Improving Addiction Care Team or IMPACT model, this article provides guidance to service providers and hospital administrators interesting in establishing similar programs.
