Spotlight: Project ECHO

A brief overview of the Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) initiative which connects clinical specialty providers such as addiction medicine experts with primary care providers through multi-point video conferencing technology. The model uses case-based learning where the speciallists combine brief lectures on clinical topics with case presentations and work with the primary care providers to enhance their knowledge and ability to treat conditions such as opioid use disorder. Project ECHO began in 2003 in New Mexico but now operates throughout the United States and internationally. This report is part of the Addiction Policy Forum’s Spotlight series which highlights innovative programs to address the opioid crisis.

The website for Project ALERT, an evidence-based substance abuse prevention curriculum for grades 7 and 8 developed by the RAND Corporation. On-line training, lessons plans, posters and videos are available for free for educators. Project ALERT recently added an opioid lesson to the core curriculum.

Addiction’s Impact on Children and Families: Resources for Parents, Grandparents, Children and Youth

Research has shown that having a close family member with a history of addiction is a risk factor for substance use and for developing a substance use disorder. In this collection, we feature resources that provide education about addiction, support for coping when a family member has an addiction, and selected resources designed to help prevent the development of substance use disorder in children and youth.

Arizona Rethink Rx Abuse Public Health Campaign

The Arizona Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family created a toolkit for communities to launch a public health information campaign to reduce prescription drug abuse. The toolkit includes targeted educational materials and information about implementing harm reduction and safe medication disposal programs as well as information for patients, caregivers, and parents to help them better understand the risks of prescription medications and how to reduce those risks.
