State officials participating in the Medicaid Evidence-based Decisions Project requested this rapid evidence review on the role of inpatient or residential detoxification for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). As this 2-page document states, research is clear and addiction experts agree that detoxification alone is not a stand-alone treatment for OUD, but is merely the first step in a providing an individualized treatment plan which may include medication assisted treatment.
