This 2016 report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine describes the history of stigma around mental health and substance use disorders, explains how stigma hinders the ability to treat these conditions, and provides recommendations for government strategies to reduce stigma. Other chapters describes evidence behind stigma reducing approaches and proposes research strategies for further understanding and reducing stigma around these common conditions.
