The Connecticut Department of Public Health convened stakeholders over 2 years to discuss the impact that substance use has on the workforce and workplace and develop recommendations for human resource best practices around substance use disorder (SUD). This white paper includes information about how the current opioid and SUD crisis developed, a discussion about the impact of SUD on employers, an evaluation of the negative effects of “zero-tolerance” workplace policies, and provides a suggested “new approach” to addiction in the workplace with 5 key principles for employers.
