This summary provides an overview of a research study that looked at how expanding public insurance eligibility led to increases in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment provider acceptance of public insurance and increases in adolescent access to SUD treatment services. The study showed that as eligibility for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) expanded between 1997 and 2011, more treatment providers began accepting public insurance and treatment of adolescent and youth SUD increased as well.
