All Sheriffs’ Authority 2019 Mental Health Report: Recommendations

This 2019 report from the National Sheriffs’ Association and partners details their policy recommendations regarding mental health (MH) and substance use disorder (SUD) issues. Recommendations include: support a national policy initiative to provide education to law enforcement personnel and their partners about MH and SUD issues and raise awareness about the impact of these conditions on law enforcement and public safety; establish programs and partnerships to divert individuals with MH and SUD issues from the criminal justice system and provide more behavioral health services in jail settings; develop re-entry programming and services to ensure individuals returning to the community receive the MH and SUD services they need; ensure sheriffs and their behavioral health partners are engaged in federal and state policy development; and provide adequate funding and supports, particularly in rural areas.
