Project ALERT

The website for Project ALERT, an evidence-based substance abuse prevention curriculum for grades 7 and 8 developed by the RAND Corporation. On-line training, lessons plans, posters and videos are available for free for educators. Project ALERT recently added an opioid lesson to the core curriculum.

Spotlight: AnchorED Rhode Island

A brief overview of the AnchorED program in Rhode Island which connects patients seen in the emergency department (ED) for an opioid-related overdose with a trained peer recovery coach. ED staff call the AnchorED hotline which dispatches recovery coaches to meet patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The coaches provide the patient with information about recovery supports and resources and may educate the patient or caregivers on naloxone use to treat overdose. Preliminary evaluation reports show that more than 80 percent of patients who meet with the coaches engage in some recovery support services upon discharge. Part of the Addiction Policy Forum’s Spotlight series which highlights innovative programs to address the opioid crisis.

The Center for Opioid Research and Education is a consortium of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and patients who together created procedure specific opioid prescribing guidelines. In 2017, the consortium published guidelines offering consensus recommendations for the range of appropriate opioid prescribing following 20 common surgical procedures, and in 2018 published guidelines for 14 common dental procedures.

Spotlight: Aware Recovery Care

A brief overview of Aware Recovery Care (ARC) substance use disorder (SUD) treatment model that provides in-home treatment from a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Operational in Connecticut and New Hampshire, the ARC model provides individualized, flexible services that address common barriers to accessing treatment such as difficulties with scheduling, or transportation, and provides SUD treatment in the person’s home environment where they will maintain their recovery. A study found that patients in ARC treatment models had recovery rates six times higher than the national average. Part of the Addiction Policy Forum’s Spotlight series which highlights innovative programs to address the opioid crisis.

Spotlight: The Alano Club of Portland’s Recovery Toolkit Series

A brief overview of the Alano Club of Portland’s Recovery Toolkit Series (RTS), an innovative, evidence-based and holistic program for persons in recovery from an SUD. RTS is a free, year-long program of evidence-based workshops, seminars and classes that provide education about addiction and instruction in therapeutic tools such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and trauma informed yoga. The Alano Club also hosts a diverse program of mutual support groups with more than 125 meetings held each week including 12-step and non-12 step groups. This report is part of the Addiction Policy Forum’s spotlight series.
